Autumn is in the air, and that means one thing: apple picking season! What could be more perfect than spending a crisp autumn day out in the orchard, filling up your bag with delicious apples? If you’re looking for an activity to enjoy with your friends or family this fall, apple picking is definitely the way to go. Here in the greater Toronto area, there are plenty of orchards where you can pick your own apples. So grab your coat and get ready for some fun!
What You Should Know Before Heading Out Apple Picking?
There are a few things to keep in mind before heading out to the orchard. First, dress for the weather! The days may be warm, but the nights can get chilly, so it’s always best to err on the side of caution and dress accordingly, and don’t forget to wear a hat and bring sunscreen with you in case it’s sunny. Second, make sure to wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so you don’t want to end up with sore feet.
Third, don’t forget to bring a bag or basket to hold all your apples (however, most farms provide you with bags). In addition, most places have some extra activities for kids; slides, swings, hiking areas, tractor-trailer rides, farm animal feeding areas, and a shop where you can purchase various products (apple cider, pies, honey, etc.). Many of the farms also have a food court on-site, so you can enjoy a delicious lunch or snack in between apple picking. And lastly, remember to have fun! Apple picking is a great activity for all ages, so enjoy the time with your loved ones.
How Much Does It Cost Approximately?
Some places charge an entrance fee of about $15 CAD, you can enjoy the park activities and eat apples while you are there. On some farms, you will only have a limited time of about 3-4 hours to spend there, whereas others will allow you to be there all day.
The cost of apple picking varies depending on the farm, but it’s usually around $20 CAD for a half-bushel bag (about 15-20lbs). Most farms also offer other sizes of bags if you want to pick more or less.
What Kind of Apple Can I Find There?
The most common type of apple in Ontario is the Macintosh, which is perfect for eating fresh or baking into pies. Other popular types include the Empire, Honeycrisp, and Red Delicious. Of course, there are many other varieties available depending on the farm you visit.
When Is The Best Time To Go Apple Picking?
The best time to go apple picking is usually in September or early October when the majority of apples are ripe and ready to be picked. However, it’s always a good idea to call the farm in advance to double-check their picking schedule.
