how to fix dead grass

Winter dry withered sad grass

A beautiful and green lawn is very important for many homeowners because it can add an appeal to the overall look of their home. Seeing dead grass spots in your lawn is an eyesore, so it is important to keep your lawn looking as healthy as possible. It is good to know how to fix dead grass, and they can even come back to life with proper care and maintenance. Grass can easily wilt, becomes dry, and die if exposed to bad weather condition. Grass can experience stress during summer when the temperature is very high and there is minimal water. Also, extended cold weather months can create huge damages to your lawn.

Fortunately, before the grass leads to death, they go through a period of dormancy. It is the time when the lawn is just waiting to come back to good health with proper care and treatment.

1. Proper Hydration

Gardeners should keep in mind that grass can still survive as long as it is properly hydrated no matter how hot the weather. The truth is that heat does not kill the grass. It is dehydration or not enough water that can cause its death. If your lawn experiences dormancy during summer because of lack of water, then giving enough water supplies will encourage the grass to grow and flourish again to bring back its green color.

As you look for ways on how to fix dead grass, you will find out that overwatering can also cause the death of the grass. You need to make sure that the soil has enough moisture.

2. Take out Weed

Grass can suffer from a lack of water and nourishment because of weeds. Just like grass, weeds also require water and nutrients to thrive. When these weeds grow beside your grass, they will take away the available water and nutrients needed by your lawn. Pull out these weeds up to their roots to prevent them from stealing water and nutrients from your lawn.

3. Mow your Lawn

How to fix dead grass is by mowing the lawn even if it looks dry. It can help the grass to recover because mowing promotes natural fertilizer to the soil. Grass clippings are very rich in nitrogen which is the main component of many fertilizers. Once these clippings are left behind, they will start to decompose, and the soil will absorb them and enrich the soil with nitrogen later on.

4. Aerate the Soil

Aside from water and nutrients, grass also needs enough air to survive. Although there is no shortage of air, the air does not reach the roots of the grass most of the time. It can happen when the soil is very compact. So it is important to aerate the soil by raking it. Also, it serves as dog urine grass repair for homeowners with furry friends who love peeing around the lawn. Without enough air, the roots deep within the soil will not grow.

Dig small holes in the soil to allow the air to pass through and reach the roots of the grass. It is easy to do with the help of an aerator or manually making holes depending on the size of your lawn.

5. Top the Soil with Compost

Composting is also known as mulching. You need to top the soil with compost for added nutrients. Hence, it is an effective dog urine grass repair as it will change the composition of the soil. It is best done right after aeration so the soil can evenly absorb all nutrients from the decayed compost to the roots. Make sure to water it lightly after top dressing with compost to give enough moisture.

6. Add some Fertilizer

Most of the time, compost is not enough to provide all the nutrients that your lawn needs. A healthy grass lawn needs a constant supply of potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen that are all present in commercial fertilizers. You can do a soil test to know if the soil lacks one of these important nutrients. Not having enough nutrients can cause dormancy to your lawn.

How to fix dead grass is to make sure the soil is not deficient with at least one of these nutrients. There are commercially available fertilizers with a high concentration of these chemicals. However, it can be very dangerous to your pets and children. Once you apply these chemicals, ensure that your pets and children will not wander around your lawn for several days.
