So what is sodding? Sodding is the process of laying down sod, which is the grass that has been harvested and chopped into small pieces. The sod can be laid on any kind of ground surface – from slopes to flat areas. It’s most often used for landscaping purposes, but it also provides a quick way to cover up an area before seeding or planting new plants. Sod can be installed by hand or with the help of machineries such as tractor-drawn sod rollers and sod cutters. This blog post will discuss what sodding is and how it benefits your landscape!
How Does Sodding Work?
The process of sodding a lawn is rather simple. The first step is to remove the existing grass from the area where you will be doing your work on. This can either be done with a sod cutter or by using an excavator.
What is a sod cutter?
A sod cutter is a machine that has sharp blades and makes it easier for you to cut the grass out of your lawn whenever you are doing sodding work in a new area. The process will not take too much time because using this machine reduces any possible issues that you might have to deal with. It saves a lot of time and will not give any hassle either. Make sure to remove the grass/weeds around the edges of the lawn where the machine cannot reach, you can do it using a pickaxe.
Now that you can see what is now underneath the old grass, it is time to turn over the soil using a rototiller.
what is a rototiller?
A rototiller is a machine that comes in different sizes. They are also known as the tilling machines and they have rotating blades, which will turn over what was under the old grass into fine dirt. This process makes it easier for you to lay new sod on top of what has been turned over by using this method because there won’t be any bumps or whatnot.
Now that your soil is nice and fine, it’s time to add some fresh soil. the reason we want to do that is that it will give us a better surface to work with and level the area and also fresh soil will help balance the organic matter and PH level. Next, we will need to level the area using a wide rake and then roll the area with a drum roller.
What is a drum roller?
A drum roller is what you need to roll the area with after adding fresh soil and leveling it. It will make your lawn look even better by going over what has been turned over many times during the process, which makes sure that everything looks good and smooth. Next, you might need to level the area again using the wide rake.
Finally, now it’s time for your new grass! You will want to lay out the pieces in a brick pattern and lay it against the slope. Once all of this has been completed and it looks like a nice green carpet again, simply add some edging around what used to be your sidewalk or driveway so that everything lines up nicely still! Once the grass has been laid out, it is time to water! It may take anywhere from two weeks up to a month for your new lawn to start coming in depending on what kind of grass you decided on (warm weather grasses will grow faster than cool-season ones).
How long does sodding typically take?
Sodding should not take you too long to do, especially if what you are working on is a small area. It might take an hour or two for the average person and it will be well worth your time when what you have done looks good!
What is the difference between sodding and seeding?
Sodding and seeding are both ways to install new grass.
The main difference between sodding and seeding is what depth you would like the sod or seed at when installing it on your lawn. Sod should be no more than one inch below what was turned over, while with seeds you have a couple of options depending on what kind you are planting.
Sodding would give you an instant lawn that will look great. You can also do what is called overseeding, which would be adding a new seed on top of what you already have to make it thicker and healthier (this process should not take too long).
Seeding takes a little bit more time than sodding because what you are doing with this method is basically planting grass seeds and waiting for what you planted to grow.
These are the main differences between sodding and seeding. If what you want is an instant lawn then go with what we just talked about, however, it is important to note that seeding might be the cheaper option!
The process of sodding is a great way to make the most out of your yard and provide it with good drainage, which will help prevent flooding. To install sod in your yard, you can either buy rolls or rent a machine from a rental store nearby. We hope this article helped you to understand what is sodding and what it involves.
